'Walter’s Ground Cherry' is a sprawling, rhizomatous herb of pinelands and coastal habitats that grows no more than a foot tall. A relative of tomatillo, this species produces yellow trumpet-shaped flowers, followed by a round yellow fruit that is encased in a papery, lantern-like calyx. The fruit start out green and when the papery exterior is faded brown, the “cherry” inside is ready to eat. It is sweet, tart, and simply delicious!
